Description

(Zinnia elegans). Like its namesake, Will Rogers zinnia is tall and lanky, growing three feet tall with brilliantly crimson 5-inch blooms! Will Rogers was a beloved American performer, humorist, and cowboy philosopher and one of the most quotable characters of the 20th century. Often called "Oklahoma's Favorite Son," he grew up on a ranch near Oologah, Oklahoma. After he died in a plane crash in 1935, Rogers' name was attached to several flowers, including a rose, a coleus, and this zinnia, bred by John Bodger of Bodger Seeds in California. He created the double-flowered, dahlia type zinnia, of which the Will Rogers is one. Bodger listed the variety as new in its seed list for 1939-40. The previous year, Los Angeles seed house Germains listed Will Rogers zinnia as a new variety, calling its color "a strikingly brilliant blending of scarlet and crimson." We are happy to be bringing back this classic flower named for an American icon!

Growing Tips: Will Rogers zinnia is an heirloom variety that grows best in full sun and well-draining, rich soil. Amend the soil with compost to improve growth and bloom production. Cut frequently or remove spent flowers for the highest production.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 4 weeks before the last frost, or directly sow outdoors after the frost risk has passed. The soil should be warm, ideally between 75-80 F, for optimal germination. Zinnias are very sensitive to frost, so wait until the conditions are consistently warm. How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/4 inch deep, spacing them 9-12 inches apart to ensure proper air circulation and minimize the risk of fungal diseases. Germination typically takes place within 4-6 days if soil conditions are optimal. If starting indoors, use biodegradable pots or other means to minimize root disturbance when transplanting.

How to Grow

Plant Will Rogers zinnia in a spot that receives at least 6-8 hours of full sun daily. Water regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid overhead watering to prevent powdery mildew. You can also fertilize lightly during the growing season.

How to Save Seeds

  • Allow the flowerhead containing the seeds to mature and dry on the plant.
  • Clip off the flowerhead and place it in a paper bag or other container.
  • Working over the top of another clean, opened container, rub the flowerheads between the palms to break them apart.
  • The seeds can be separated from the chaff by first screening and then winnowing.
  • Store in a cool, dry, dark place over winter.
