Description

(Beta vulgaris). Best Seller! A glorious gilded beet with supremely sweet flesh and dense nutrition. The rich golden roots do not bleed or stain, making for less kitchen mess. It is an excellent variety for kids and newbie beet eaters, as the mellow flavor is much less earthy than regular red beets, and it's a perfect choice for market gardeners and those looking to grow a rainbow of produce. Rich in folate, manganese, and, of course, beta-carotene. Yellow beets date back to at least the 1820s, but they did not become widely adopted by gardeners until Burpee Seed introduced a golden beet in the 1960s. Perfect for raw eating, roasting, juicing, and more!

Growing Tips: Golden beets are an excellent choice for gardeners looking to add a vibrant, sweet root vegetable to their garden. These beets prefer well-draining soil rich in organic matter, with a slightly acidic to neutral pH (6.0-7.0). They thrive in full sun but can tolerate partial shade. Consistent moisture is crucial, so keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Thin early for best results.

When to Grow

Golden beets are cool-season crops, best planted in early spring (about 3-4 weeks before the last frost) or late summer for a fall harvest. They can handle mild frost, making them ideal for USDA Hardiness Zones 2-10. In Zones 6a and 6b, the ideal planting time is mid-March to mid-April. Check local frost dates to determine the best time to plant for your garden. How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds directly into the garden, about 1/2 inch deep and 1-2 inches apart, with rows spaced 12-18 inches apart. For containers, choose a pot at least 10-12 inches deep. Keep the soil consistently moist, and thin seedlings to 4-6 inches apart once they reach a few inches tall. This thinning ensures adequate space for root development.

How to Grow

Golden beets require regular watering and benefit from a layer of mulch to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Fertilize with a balanced, organic fertilizer every 4-6 weeks. Watch for pests like aphids and slugs, and practice crop rotation to prevent disease. The beets are usually ready for harvest about 55 days after planting, when they reach 2-3 inches in diameter.

How to Save Seeds

  • Beets are biennial, which means they don't flower until the second year of growth.
  • In the first year, when frost approaches, either try to overwinter them in the ground with floating row cover (a bit risky if you live in the north) or dig up the choicest plant before a freeze and store it indoors in a cool, dry, dark location until spring.
  • Replant after the last spring frost and allow to flower.
  • Beets are wind-pollinated and will easily cross with other beet varieties that are flowering, as well as with Swiss chards (which fortunately very rarely flower without assistance).
  • Properly stored seeds should remain viable for 5 years.

FAQ

Can I grow Golden beets in containers?

Yes, golden beets grow well in containers. Ensure the container is at least 10-12 inches deep, with good drainage. Regular watering is essential, as container soil dries out faster than garden soil.

What are common pests and diseases for Golden beets?

Golden beets may be affected by aphids, slugs, and fungal diseases. Regular monitoring and organic pest control methods, like neem oil, can help manage these issues.

When should I harvest Golden beets?

Golden beets are typically ready for harvest about 55 days after sowing, once they reach 2-3 inches in diameter. Smaller beets tend to be more tender.
