Description
The most novel tomato we have seen, this tomato is like a big bunch of cherry tomatoes all fused together: an amazing trait that had everyone here asking questions about the alien-looking, bumpy tomatoes. Also called “Traveler Tomato” (“reise” is German for “travel” or “journey”) for the ability to tear it apart a piece at a time, with no need for a knife. This type of tomato traces its roots to Central America where the native people would carry traveler tomatoes on trips, to eat as they walked. Bright red tomatoes taste—well, rather sour, strong and acidic. The perfect tomato for those who love raw lemons, but who cares? They are still far-out and groovy.

Growing Guide

When to Grow

Start Reisetomate seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last spring frost date, or direct sow once frost is past if you garden in a long-summer climate. Barely cover the seeds; they germinate most rapidly at 70°F and above, with 80°F best, and come up in 7 to 14 days. Give the sprouts good light, and set transplants out after the danger of frost has passed.

What gardeners are saying

  • Bold, tangy flavor: Sharp and acidic, a tart tang that fans of sour tomatoes love.

  • Tear-apart snacking: Kids pull off the lobes and eat them as they go.

  • Big, vigorous plants: Vines reach 6 to 7 feet and shrug off heat and drought.

  • Heavy producer: Bucketloads of fruit from just a handful of plants.

  • Heads up: The tart flavor divides the table, and fruit ripens unevenly.
