Description
(Solanum lycopersicum). A unique, pepper-shaped fruit in vivid crimson color from New Jersey, this variety is essential for bright red, robust sauce and equally suited for fresh eating. Tomatoes average 6 inches in length and are very meaty with few seeds. A later maturing variety, but so worth the wait, as the flavor is incredible and the yields are high. It was a pillar of the once legendary New Jersey tomato growing industry and is an ancestor to “Jersey Giant.” This has been one of Jere Gettle’s favorites for decades. Don’t try to make an authentic New Jersey style pizza without this sauce!

FAQ
What shape and size are Jersey Devil tomatoes?
They are a unique pepper-shaped fruit in vivid crimson, averaging 6 inches in length, very meaty with few seeds. That makes them essential for bright red, robust sauce, and they are equally suited to fresh eating.
It is listed at 90 days, so will it ripen in a short season?
This is a later maturing variety, and the 90 days counts from setting out transplants rather than from sowing. Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before your last spring frost, transplant after frost, and give it a warm, full-sun spot; tomatoes are a tropical crop that needs plenty of warm weather and a long growing season.
How do I deal with hornworms?
Hand pick them daily; chickens love them. The caterpillars are excellent camouflage artists, but their excrement, which looks like small grenades, gives them away. If one is covered in what look like grains of white rice, it has been parasitized by beneficial Braconid wasps, so leave it in place as a nursery.
