Description

(Solanum lycopersicum). Incredible flavor, color and history! Introduced in 1893 by James Thorburn of New York, this is one of the most sensational tomatoes we have ever grown. With honey-brown skin, orange-pink flesh, and green seed mass, this is an eye-catching slicer with an out-of-this-world flavor. The tomato produces heavily during mid-season and then drops off quickly once cool weather sets in. As a cooker it will yield a pumpkin-orange sauce with a floral aroma. We are excited to have this tomato that was painted in color in Thorburn’s 1893 catalog; at last we can offer this rare treasure! From the collection of Dr. William Woys Weaver.

Growing Tips: To grow healthy Thorburn's Terra-Cotta tomatoes, select a location that receives full sun for 6-8 hours daily. Plant in well-draining, fertile soil with a pH between 6.0 and 6.8. Keep the soil evenly moist, watering at the base to prevent foliage diseases.

When to Grow

Start seeds indoors 6-10 weeks before the last expected frost date. Transplant seedlings outdoors after the danger of frost has passed and temperatures consistently stay above 60 F. In regions with shorter growing seasons, consider using row covers or planting in a greenhouse to extend the growing period. You can also use a heat mat to help keep the soil warm, which is especially important during germination. If you’re not sure how to find your first and last frost dates, consult our blog post "Our Experts Answer Questions, Share Resources."

How to Sow and Plant

Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep in seed-starting mix. During germination, keep the soil temperature between 70-80 F. After hardening off, you can transplant seedlings spacing them about 24 inches apart in the garden to ensure good airflow and room for growth.

How to Grow

Apply a balanced fertilizer during planting and side-dress during the growing season to support vigorous growth and fruit production. Prune by removing suckers for better airflow and focusing the plant's energy on fruit development. Mulch around the base of the plants to retain soil moisture and regulate temperature. Monitor for common pests like aphids and tomato hornworms, employing organic controls as necessary.

How to Save Seeds

  • Most tomatoes are self-pollinating and don't frequently cross; in a garden setting, separating by 25 feet should prevent 99% of cross-pollination. Or you can bag and hand pollinate for 100% purity.
  • On a small scale, seeds may be scooped from the fruits and dried on a paper towel.
  • For larger quantities or cleaner seeds, fermentation for a few days is recommended.
  • Once dry, tomato seed can be stored in a cool, dry, dark place; good seed retains viability for 5 years or more.

FAQ

How big are Thorburn's Terra-Cotta tomatoes?

The fruits are medium-sized, typically weighing between 3 to 8 ounces.

Can I grow Thorburn's Terra-Cotta tomatoes in containers?

Yes, with adequate support and a large enough container (at least 5 gallons), they can grow very well in containers. Ensure the container has good drainage and provide a stake or cage for support.

How long is the shelf life of the harvested Thorburn's Terra-Cotta tomatoes?

When stored in a cool, dry place, these tomatoes can last up to one week, maintaining their flavor and texture. Refrigeration could extend their shelf life slightly but could also diminish their flavor.
