Description

(Brassica oleracea). If you've had trouble growing cauliflower, try this amazing variety. It can be harvested either at the "baby head" size or when fully mature at 10-16 inches. Brilliant white, self-blanching heads are covered by large abundant wrapper leaves that protect them from sun, heat, and cold; easy to grow in the north or south. It keeps well in the field and is heavy bearing, so pick as needed and prepare for a large harvest. It does well in wet or clay soil too! Approximately 75 days to maturity.

Growing Tips: Amazing cauliflower is best grown in cool weather, ideally between 50-75 F, as it does not tolerate extreme heat. It thrives in well-drained, fertile soil with a pH range of 6.0 to 7.5. Regular, consistent watering is essential to maintain soil moisture, as fluctuations can cause the plant to bolt or produce undersized heads. Mulching around the plants helps retain moisture and regulate soil temperature, which is crucial for developing healthy cauliflower heads.

When to Grow

For spring crops, start seeds indoors 4-6 weeks before the last expected frost, then transplant seedlings outdoors 2-4 weeks before the last frost. For a fall crop, count the 75 days to maturity back from your first fall frost to fix the transplant date, then start seeds indoors in early to midsummer about 14 to 16 weeks before that frost so the seedlings are ready to set out a full 75 days ahead of it. These timing strategies take advantage of cooler temperatures, which are ideal for cauliflower growth. How to Sow and Plant

Start by sowing cauliflower seeds 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in seed trays or pots filled with quality seed-starting mix. Maintain a soil temperature of about 65-70 F for optimal germination, which typically occurs in 7-10 days. Once seedlings reach about 4-6 weeks old and have developed 4-5 true leaves, they can be transplanted outdoors. Space the seedlings 18-20 inches apart to allow sufficient room for growth

How to Grow

Cauliflower requires consistent moisture, so water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. It's a heavy feeder, so apply a balanced fertilizer every 3-4 weeks or use compost to provide nutrients. To keep the heads white and protect them from the sun, blanch the heads by tying the outer leaves over them when they are about 2-3 inches in diameter. This process shields the heads from sunlight, preventing them from turning yellow or developing a bitter taste.

How to Save Seeds

  • For a seed saving crop, isolate cauliflower from other brassicas (such as broccoli and kale) by one mile to avoid cross pollination.
  • Select your best plants to keep for seed and leave them to flower.
  • In short-season areas with harsh winters, the plants can be mulched and left in the ground with a row cover, and in the second season the plant will send up flower stalks from the head. As they mature, they will become seed pods.
  • Once the plant has died back and the seed stalks/pods are brown and dry, pull the entire plant and hang it for up to two weeks in a dry, well-ventilated area.
  • Break open the seed pods with your hands or a rolling pin over a container such as a bowl or plate, and separate and extract the seeds.
  • Properly stored (keep them cool and dry!), the seeds of cauliflower and other brassicas will be viable for up to five years.

FAQ

Can Amazing cauliflower tolerate heat?

It prefers cooler temperatures. Prolonged heat can cause bolting, where the plant prematurely flowers and stops head development.

How can I prevent Amazing cauliflower heads from turning yellow?

This is a self-blanching variety: the large wrapper leaves fold over the head on their own and keep it white. If a head is unusually exposed, you can tuck or loosely tie the outer leaves over it until harvest.

What pests should I watch out for when growing Amazing cauliflower?

Common pests include aphids, cabbage loopers, and cabbage worms. Use organic pest control methods or physical barriers to protect the plants.
