Description

(Cucumis sativus). Great Taste! The small, 9-inch fruit with tender skin and few seeds makes excellent pickles and sets the standard for slicing cucumbers; buttery soft, supremely sweet, and never bitter. This old Japanese variety, also known as “Tokyo Green,” came from China in the Meiji era, then became the dominant variety sold around Tokyo. The 1932 edition of the Oriental Seed Company catalog noted: “The vines attain twice the length of common varieties.” They do well on fences and trellises, saving space in the gardens. Vines are almost mildew proof and well adapted to hot, dry summers.

Growing Tips: Tokiwa Tokyo Green cucumbers are vigorous, early producers of dark green, glossy fruits with minimal seeds and superior crunch. This heat-tolerant variety is also prized for its resilience to powdery mildew and other diseases. Ideal for fresh eating, the fruits are best when harvested young. Trellising helps maintain fruit shape and improves airflow. Some afternoon shade is beneficial in the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Sow Tokiwa Tokyo Green cucumber seeds after the danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures have warmed to at least 70°F. In shorter-season areas, start seeds indoors 3–4 weeks before the last frost and transplant once the soil is warm and stable. How to Sow and Plant

Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep in rich, well-drained soil. Space plants 12 to 18 inches apart in rows or mounds. Add compost or aged manure to boost soil fertility. Install a trellis or support structure at planting to manage vigorous vines and help produce straighter, cleaner fruits during the growing season.

How to Grow

Keep soil evenly moist with consistent watering at the base of the plant. Avoid wetting foliage to reduce disease risk. Mulch helps conserve moisture and control weeds. Feed every 2–3 weeks with a balanced organic fertilizer. Harvest cucumbers at 6–8 inches long for peak flavor, and pick frequently to extend the harvest window.

How to Save Seeds

  • Select disease-free plants for seed saving.
  • Allow fruits to fully ripen on the vine (they will turn yellow).
  • Scoop out seeds and pulp into a jar or bowl with water.
  • Ferment at room temperature for 2–3 days, stirring daily.
  • Rinse seeds thoroughly and dry on a screen or paper towel for 1–2 weeks.
  • Store in a cool, dry place in a labeled and dated airtight container.

FAQ

Are Tokiwa Tokyo Green cucumbers good for pickling?

The 9-inch fruit, with its tender skin and few seeds, makes excellent pickles and sets the standard for slicing cucumbers. Harvest when young and firm for best pickling quality and vibrant color.

Can Tokiwa cucumbers be grown in greenhouses?

Yes, with two caveats. The vines attain twice the length of common varieties, so allow plenty of vertical room, and where no pollinators can reach the flowers you will need to transfer pollen from the male blooms to the female ones by hand to set fruit.

What makes Tokiwa Tokyo Green cucumbers different from standard slicing cucumbers?

Tokiwa cucumbers have thinner skin, fewer seeds, and a more delicate, sweet flavor. Their exceptional crunch and elegant appearance make them a standout in salads and gourmet presentations.
