Description

95 days. Same malevolent shape and form as Bhut Jolokia, and the heat level is comparably wicked, but this natural variation ripens red-brown to a rich milk chocolate. Considered sweeter than the Red Bhut. (This variety has a reputation for being even trickier to germinate than the standard Red Bhut; bottom heat should be considered essential for germination, which may still take weeks.)

Growing Tips: Start indoors in bright light 8-12 weeks before last frost date. Heat mat helps to warm soil and speed germination. Peppers often appreciate a bit of afternoon shade during the hottest summer weather.

When to Grow

Chocolate Bhut Jolokia has a reputation for being even trickier to germinate than the standard Red Bhut; start seed indoors in bright light 8 to 12 weeks before your last frost date. Bottom heat should be considered essential. Sow ¼ inch deep and keep the flat around 80–85°F, where the usual 7 to 10 days is a best case for this variety — it may still take weeks, so leave the flat alone rather than resowing. Transplant hardened plants 14 to 18 inches apart once temperatures are consistently 65°F and frost is behind you; the fruit needs roughly 95 days to ripen.

FAQ

How is the Chocolate Bhut different from the red one?

Same malevolent shape and form, and the heat level is comparably wicked, but this natural variation ripens red-brown to a rich milk chocolate and is considered sweeter than the Red Bhut.

My seeds have not sprouted — should I give up?

Not yet. This variety is trickier to germinate than most, and even with bottom heat it may take weeks rather than the 7 to 10 days most peppers need. An electric seed-starting heat mat works well, and so do household hotspots such as the top of the refrigerator.

Any precautions when handling the seed and fruit?

It is a good idea to wear gloves while processing very hot peppers, and to consider wearing a mask when working with a large quantity of dried seeds.
