What are the pros? Easy to grow
What are the cons? Quite a bit of work shelling
I'm new to cream peas. This is the first type I've grown. They were pretty simple. Took a while for them to get going. Needed more water than I'd expected but I'm in a hot dry climate. My wife remembered these from her childhood. Every website I saw discussed picking them dry but I learned that her family prefers them still a little green. I suggest picking them right as the pod turns a tint of yellow. Any greener is ok but hard to shell. Dry is fine but there's a special subtle difference to the green peas. Boil them in a little water with some butter or in ham stock. Serve with some of the liquid. We found fresh cream peas at HEB Central Market but only occasionally. It's a bit of work to grow and she'll these. Dry are available online. Hoping what I've learned helps others.
