Growing Tips, Tricks and FAQs

Growing Tips

Wade's Giant Indian flint corn thrives in fertile, well-drained soil with full sun exposure. Regular watering, particularly during dry spells, is essential for good growth. Incorporating organic matter or compost into the soil enhances fertility. This corn variety benefits from companion planting with beans or squash, which can help in nutrient fixation and weed control.

When to Grow

Plant Wade's Giant Indian flint corn when soil temperatures reach about 60 degrees F, after all danger of frost is past. This variety matures in about 110 days, making it most suitable for regions with a longer growing season. For specific frost dates, check local agricultural extensions or online resources to match your USDA hardiness zone.

How to Sow and Plant

Directly sow seeds outdoors once the soil is warm, approximately 1-2 inches deep. Space the seeds 4-6 inches apart in rows that are 30-36 inches apart. After seedlings reach about 4 inches in height, thin them to about 12 inches apart to reduce competition for nutrients and sunlight. Regular cultivation and hilling up around the plants help in maintaining soil aeration and support. Succession planting prolongs harvest, and planting in blocks improves pollination.

How to Grow

Maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during critical growth stages such as flowering and ear development. Applying a balanced fertilizer throughout the growing season supports healthy growth. Mulching around the plants can help retain soil moisture and suppress weeds. Deep watering is preferred over frequent shallow watering to encourage deep root growth.

How to Save
  • Corn is wind pollinated and will easily cross with other varieties (including GMO corn!). You will need at least 1 mile of isolation to avoid cross pollination. You can also use staggered timing or caging techniques.
  • Hand pick ears when fully dried on stalk. Seeds keep best if left on the ear; just remove at planting time.
  • Sweet corn seeds will remain viable for 2 years; dent corn will last up to 5 years when properly stored.
